Options for Living

We hear about the extremes - old people insisting on staying in a house that they can no longer manage and others pushed into a nursing home.

But there are lots of options and stages in between ranging from services to help you stay in your home, to supported accommodation to full-care.

Let's drop any preconceived ideas and look at what is really available.

Stay in your own home

If you want to stay put, finding constructive ways to take care of shopping, home maintenance and other chores is important. More here...

Moving to an easier home

Maintaining your independent lifestyle can be easier if you live close to services in an easy-to maintain home. More here...

Living with Family

Sometimes the best option but often contentious with generations struggling to cope with different expectations, different lifestyles and competing commitments. More here...

Semi-supported Accommodation

This option can be a good compromise - you have your own home and territory but meals, laundry and cleaning services are near at hand when you need them. More here...

Respite Care

If you choose to care for your parents or partner, respite care can be very important to your wellbeing. More here...

Full care

This is still more flexible that many people realise.

You need to plan ahead to get the widest choice and avoid crisis situations where decisions need to be made too quickly.

There are several government publications about aged care options. Get copies from your state or federal MP. Check with your council about their services for aged care.
